It is with sincere concern for the Highline College community that we acknowledge the recent lockdown at Highline College in Des Moines, following reports of possible gunfire near campus. While the situation ultimately concluded with an all-clear and no injuries reported, it nevertheless caused understandable fear, disruption, and uncertainty among students, faculty, and staff.
According to official reports, the lockdown was initiated after authorities received information suggesting potential gunfire in the vicinity of the campus. In response, the college’s emergency alert system was activated, sending timely notifications through text messages, emails, and other communication channels. Students and staff were instructed to shelter in place, secure classrooms and offices, and remain indoors while law enforcement assessed the situation.
Local law enforcement agencies responded swiftly, conducting a thorough sweep of the campus and surrounding areas. After an extensive investigation, officials confirmed that no active shooter was present and no victims were found. An all-clear notice was later issued, allowing normal campus operations to safely resume.
We extend our appreciation to campus safety personnel and responding officers for their prompt coordination and commitment to ensuring the safety of all individuals on site. Their efforts reflect the importance of preparedness and rapid response in situations involving potential threats.
Highline College regularly conducts emergency preparedness drills, including lockdown and active threat scenarios, to help ensure that students and staff are equipped to respond appropriately during critical incidents. These training efforts play a vital role in maintaining safety and awareness within the campus environment.
Although this incident did not result in physical harm, it serves as a reminder of the emotional impact such events can have on a community. We extend our support to all those affected, including students, faculty, and families who experienced anxiety during the lockdown.
As the situation is further reviewed, the Highline College community remains grateful for its safety while also reflecting on the importance of vigilance, preparedness, and clear communication. May this experience reinforce continued commitment to safety and unity across campus.
