Officials in Iowa City have identified a suspect in connection with Sunday’s shooting at the Pedestrian Mall, which left five people injured and prompted a major police investigation.
Authorities say they are actively searching for 17-year-old Damarian M. Jones of Cedar Rapids, previously listed as “person of interest #3” in the case. Investigators allege that Jones fired six shots during the incident, striking five individuals who, according to police, were not involved in the altercation that preceded the gunfire.
Jones is facing multiple charges, including five counts of attempted murder. Officials have confirmed that he will be charged as an adult once taken into custody.
Following the shooting, Iowa City officials announced increased police presence in the downtown area, particularly around the Ped Mall, as a precaution and to address public concerns about safety and potential further violence. Additional patrols are expected to remain in place through the weekend.
Medical updates indicate that four of the five victims have been released from the hospital. One individual remains in critical condition with a life-threatening head injury, according to authorities. Their identities have not been released at this time.
Law enforcement continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and is urging anyone with information about Damarian M. Jones or his whereabouts to contact the Crime Stoppers hotline immediately.
