A man wanted in connection with a deadly shooting on Jacksonville’s Westside was shot and killed by police on Wednesday after he allegedly opened fire during an attempted arrest in Julington Creek, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO).
Authorities said the suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, was wanted in relation to a shooting earlier that morning that left a woman dead and a man injured. Investigators also noted he had an outstanding warrant for theft and was considered a person of interest in the homicide investigation.
According to JSO, officers located the man in the Julington Creek area and attempted to take him into custody. During the encounter, police say the suspect produced a firearm and fired at officers. Law enforcement returned fire, striking the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
No officers were reported injured during the confrontation.
Officials have not yet provided further details about the initial Westside shooting, including what led up to the violence or the identities of the victims. The investigation into both incidents remains ongoing as detectives work to determine the full sequence of events.
Authorities have not indicated whether additional suspects are being sought in connection with the earlier shooting. JSO has stated that more information will be released as it becomes available.
